Slovak gas firm gets ready for Russian shutdown

The Slovakian gas utility company Slovensky Plynarensky Priemysel (SPP) is taking action in light of another possible suspension of natural gas by Gazprom, the Russian energy firm.
SPP''s Martina Grenova told the Slovakian news agency TASR that Gazprom may well shut off supply if it cannot reach an agreement with Ukrainian state firm Naftogaz.
Gas supplies to Europe had already been halted earlier this year, hitting Slovakia.
"We have been thoroughly monitoring the development ... and we are negotiating with E.ON Ruhrgas, GDF SUEZ, and VNG on alternative supplies of natural gas to Slovakia in case the supplies of gas from Russia are suspended," Ms Grenova told the news provider.
"In view of our experience from January, all of SPP''s activities are aimed at ensuring that a possible suspension of supplies will not affect our customers."
A spokesman for the European Union, Ferran Tarradellas, said that the bloc was watching the situation between Russia and Ukraine "very closely" in case it may end up impacting on supplies.
