The drop in Slovakia''s industrial output was less than anticipated in the 12 months to March, new figures have shown.

Findings from Slovakia''s Statistics Office revealed that the industrial production index fell by 18 per cent in March 2009, compared with the same month in 2008.

However, the fall was lower than the 21.2 per cent forecast by the market to take place during the month.

The figures also revealed that the electronics sector showed the most positive signs of growth as industrial output increased by 50.3 per cent when compared with March 2008.

Martin Lenko, VUB Bank senior analyst, told Reuters: "This number is better than expected, but in these volatile months, this is not something to be taken as a trend.

"Industrial output should show declines in the coming months, but the pace of the slowdown should ease, as we see it globally in the US and in the eurozone."

The manufacturing sector of coke and refined petroleum products also recorded a rise in output.
