The celebrations in Brussels marking the fifth anniversary since Slovakia entered the European Union (EU) will help increase awareness of the state.

Prime minister Robert Fico said that yesterday''s (May 12th) presentation in the European capital was not for the personal pleasure of politicians but to emphasise the presence of Slovakia within the EU.

Mr Fico told a news conference: "Europe must know more about Slovakia, it must know our peculiarities and particularities," reported the TASR news agency.

He added that the celebrations are important in winning new business opportunities "because investors who think about Slovakia look at this country not only from the perspective of articles in the Labour Code and average income".

The Slovak Agriculture Ministry and Slovakia''s Permanent Representation to the EU helped organise the Taste of Slovakia display.

It was a presentation focusing on the output of Slovakian forestry and agriculture as well as Slovak produce, wine, and culture.

Slovakia became a full member of the EU on May 1st 2004.
