The foreign trade surplus for Slovakia has grown despite forecasts suggesting it would shrink.

Figures from Slovakia''s Statistical Office revealed that the balance showed a surplus of €81.9 million (£73.2 million) in March.

The statistic follows a €78.7 million surplus during February.

Analysts had predicted Slovakia would have a €25 million trade deficit during March, Reuters reported.

Eduard Hagara, ING Bank analyst, told the news provider: "There is no reason to be overly optimistic, one month does not mean that there is a trend, though there are some signs [of improvement]."

"The industrial production structure showed the electronics and car sectors have improved, on a seasonally adjusted basis," he added.

Further findings showed that Slovakian exports dropped by 20.1 per cent during March while the figure for total imports was down by 23.1 per cent compared with March 2008.

Maria Valachyova, Slovenska Sporitelna senior analyst, added that the surplus figure was better than originally expected but it is difficult to predict what this means for future months.
