Car manufacturer PSA Peugeot is to increase production levels at its plant in Trnava, Slovakia.

The company is responding to growing demand for smaller vehicles by raising daily output from 850 to 900 vehicles.

Peter Svec, communications director at PSA Peugeot, told AFP: "Government incentives provided to car makers in the European countries, especially various ''green bonuses'', have led to an increased demand for small cars.

"The demand currently exceeds our output, therefore we decided to prolong the afternoon shift by one hour for two months, starting June 1st."

PSA Peugeot''s plant in Trnava produces the Peugeot 207 and C3 Picasso models.

Production of the latter vehicle was officially launched by PSA Peugeot on March 26th this year.

The Trnava facility is the only plant being used to produce the vehicle and the firm has plans in place to manufacture 110,000 annually.

Earlier in the year PSA Peugeot announced it was to lay off 190 workers between March and December 2009 because of the impact of the global economic downturn upon demand for vehicles within Europe.
