Slovakia has 'low rates of software piracy'

Slovakia is among the states with the least occurrences of software piracy, new research has revealed.
Findings from the sixth annual Business Software Alliance and IDC software study revealed that Slovakia''s piracy rate is 43 per cent, despite central and eastern Europe having the highest rates of piracy with a regional average of 65 per cent.
Piracy rates in Slovakia have been falling during recent years with 48 per cent seen in 2004.
The cost of piracy in 2008 was the highest Slovakia has endured at $62 million (£40 million) and up from the $48 million recorded in 2004.
John Gantz, chief research officer IDC, said that the global recession could see an increase in piracy as people attempt to save more money.
However, he added that the current situation may have a positive impact as companies spend more money on niche licensing.
Pre-installed software in netbooks may also help curb the instances of software piracy further.
Global figures from the study showed that instances of software piracy increased from 38 per cent seen in 2007 to 41 per cent in 2008.
