Slovakia is to lose its Special Court as it was not established in line with the state''s constitution, a new ruling has said.

The Constitutional Court ruled that the court was established in breach of Slovakia''s constitution by a fast-track legislative procedure.

LS-HZDS and SNS, the coalition partner political parties, were behind the motion.

Speaking following the decision, prime minister Robert Fico told TASR he was in favour of trying to save the Special Court.

"We respect and acknowledge the Constitutional Court''s ruling. The Constitutional Court didn''t do anything apart from what it is entitled to do by the Constitution - to decide whether the law is line with the Constitution," he said.

Mr Fico added: "The former coalition, while still in government, passed a confusing law on the Special Court and Special Prosecutor''s Office."

The Slovak Parliament originally approved the establishment of the Special Court in October 2003 and the legislative proceedings began in July 2005.
