Employees in the UK are finding it increasingly difficult to switch off from their work worries and commitments when they are on their holidays, according to new research.

The study by Expedia revealed that 23 per cent of office workers owned up to keeping in touch with colleagues while away and checking work emails, an increase of ten per cent on last year.

Furthermore, 22 per cent confess to having to cancel a holiday due to work commitments.

Commenting on the research, Jonathan Cudworth, head of product marketing at Expedia.co.uk, said part of the reason for this trend was that work was demanding so much of people''s time.

"A few years ago, you could go on holiday and there would be no way of getting in touch with you but not anymore," he added.

Britons who really want to get away from it all may find that a canoe trip down the Dunajec river in Slovakia allows them to do so.

Guardian reader Lucy RM recently said that the Pieniny National Park where she sailed is a "gem".
