Is aviation unfairly taxed?

The aviation sector is unfairly taxed by the UK government, one sector commentator has asserted, news which Britons planning a holiday to Slovakia may be in agreement with.

In the 2007 pre-Budget report, the government announced it would consult on proposals to replace Air Passenger Duty (APD) with a per plane tax.

However, in the Budget last year the government decided to reform the APD regime rather than proceed with a per plane tax.

James Fremantle, industry affairs manager at the Air Transport Users Council, said the tax was unfair when compared against other sectors as the proceeds did not go towards offsetting the aviation industry''s impact on the environment, but into the general Exchequer.

"The government is wrong to bring APD in in the first place and certainly to increase it which it is proposing to do from next year," he said.

Mr Fremantle concluded that the aviation sector was now concerned about how the tax would impact on its passenger numbers.
