Slovakians urged to vote

The EU has set up three-dimensional installations in three of Slovakia''s major towns to encourage voting in the upcoming European elections.

Each display has been installed to provide information on issues including security and consumer protection and how a vote can shape Slovakia''s future, the BBC reports.

The initiative has been launched in an effort to boost voter turnout, after just 17 per cent of the electorate turned out to vote in Slovakia''s first European elections in 2004.

Robert Hajsel, head of the Slovakia office for the European Parliament, said that the previous low turnout could be related to the Slovakian public''s contentment.

"They are actually happy and maybe don''t feel this need to change something. If they are satisfied with the European Parliament sometimes they really don''t see that they have to go and vote," he told the news provider.

Mr Hajsel added that the relative apathy shown by voters in 2004 may have been related to voter fatigue as the elections came soon after the vote over EU membership.

The results of the Slovakian election are expected to be revealed on Sunday (June 7th) evening.
