Slovak State Railway is to work with national rail administrations in the Ukraine, Russia and Austria on a track extension project.

As part of the agreement, the four bodies are to collaborate on a feasibility study examining potential work on the railway running between Vienna in Austria and Kosice in Slovakia.

The project has been set up to assess the potential for connecting central European rail with regions crossed by the Trans-Siberian line as part of a strategy to attract more freight to the Asia-Russia-Central Europe route.

Additionally, the four countries are looking to increase the competitiveness of rail when compared with transporting goods by road or boat.

Vladimir Yakunin, Russian Railways chief, told the Moscow Times: "Each party will contribute €2 million (£1.7 million) toward feasibility and research studies for this new transportation corridor."

A declaration was signed by representatives from the organisations during the fourth international business forum Strategic Partnership 1520 taking place in Sochi, Radio Slovakia reports.
