European Parliament candidate touts green jobs

A Slovakian Green Party candidate for the upcoming European Parliament elections has suggested that Slovakia could create 50,000 environmental protection jobs in five years.
Olga Pietruchova told TASR that some of these jobs could be in the renewable energy sector, while others may come from improving the energy-efficiency of existing housing stock.
She suggested that any government assistance for boosting the economy during the downturn should also be ethical from an environmental standpoint.
"During a crisis in particular, state incentives for the economy are indispensable, but they need to be carried out in a responsible manner," she explained.
Slovakia currently has 14 MEPs but saw a low voter turnout in the last European Parliament elections in 2004, which were also the country''s first, having only joined the European Union that year.
Just over 700,000 Slovakians took part in the election, despite more than four million being registered to vote.
The next European Parliament election will take place in Slovakia on June 6th.
