The Slovakian Special Court should be given more powers and a new name, according to prime minister Robert Fico.

Slovakia''s Constitutional Court has ruled that the Special Court is unconstitutional and Mr Fico is hoping to find a solution to the problem quickly, TASR reports.

The prime minister''s proposal will see a Specialised Criminal Court set up in the town of Pezinok on the day that the Constitutional Court''s decision becomes law.

Mr Fico hopes to bring in legislation to create the court and will make sure that it addresses the concerns laid out by the Constitutional Court.

The new court will conduct trials concerning "standard criminal offences of public officials, which are currently decided on by ordinary courts", Mr Fico explained.

He added: "That is, we''re transferring... criminal offences, which would normally be dealt with by a district or regional court, to the Specialised Court''s remit."

The ruling which declared the Special Court unconstitutional took place over a week ago and saw six of the 13 Constitutional Court judges vote against it.

However, the decision was welcomed by justice minister Stefan Harabin.
