Social Democrats win five seats in European elections

Slovakia''s ruling party the Social Democrats has won five seats with 32 per cent of the vote at the European Parliamentary elections.
The results for the elections, which were published by the Central Election Commission (UVK), showed that the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU), the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDU) each won two seats.
SDKU received 16.98 per cent of the vote, SMK 11.33 per cent and KDU 10.87 per cent.
Statistics from the commission showed that 19.64 per cent of all eligible voters in Slovakia registered their votes.
In the 2004 European Parliament elections, turnout was less than 17 per cent of eligible voters.
More results showed that the Slovak National Party and the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia will each have one seat in the parliament following the vote.
The secretary for the UVK told TASR that the European elections ran smoothly without any attempts to infringe electoral law.
