Slovakian banking assistance bill approved

A package of financial bailout measures has been approved by the Slovakian government as part of an initiative to relieve economic pressures on lenders.
The new bill, which has been proposed by the Finance Ministry, should allow banks hit by the economic downturn to apply to the government for financial support.
TASR reported that the ministry wants the Slovakian government to do what it can to make the preventative bill part of the state''s legislation.
However, finance minister Jan Pociatek told Reuters that the changes to the country''s laws were not being hurried through because any of Slovakia''s banks were in danger of collapse.
He said that the legislation was being introduced to adhere to recommendations by the European Commission and should be viewed as a pre-emptive measure, adding "it is absolutely not the case that some bank needs this".
Meanwhile, ministers in the European Union are debating proposals to establish EU authorities to oversee financial activities within member states.
