Aeroplane performance 'being optimised'

UK holidaymakers with an interest in green and ethical travel may be interested to hear that manufacturers of aircraft and their engines are still trying to optimise aeroplane performance.
Laurence Price, director of aviation strategy at Mott MacDonald, explained that any weight taken on to planes "translates" into an amount of energy needed to transport it on the aircraft, to both lift it off the ground and keep it in the air.
"This is why airlines are working with manufacturers, both engine and airframe, to get the lightest possible structures to minimise fuel burn," he stated, in news which may please people keen to go green when they take a holiday abroad.
Mr Price added that such manufacturers were now looking at issues such as the weight of the aircraft and the amount of fuel burnt.
According to a report by Omega, between 1986 and 2004 the amount of fuel consumed per passenger per km decreased by 27 per cent.
