Slovakian president sworn in for second term

Ivan Gasparovic, the Slovakian president, has been inaugurated for the second time in a ceremony in parliament.

The 68-year-old president pledged an oath in front of Constitutional Court chair Ivetta Macejkova and now officially begins his second five-year term of office.

Mr Gasparovic, who was first elected to power in 2004, is the first head of state to serve a second term since Slovakia''s independence in 1993.

He said: "On my honour and conscience I affirm my faith in the Slovak Republic. I shall look after the welfare of the Slovak nation, national minorities and ethnic groups living in the Slovak Republic. I shall perform my duties in the interest of the people and shall protect and defend the Constitution and other laws," TASR reported.

Mr Gasparovic won the presidential elections in April of this year beating nearest rival Iveta Radicova who was hoping to become the state''s first female leader.

In the presidential run-off race on April 4th he scored 55.53 per cent to his opponent''s 44.46 per cent.
