Slovak GDP to grow in 2010

New statistics from the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) predict that the country''s economy will recover during 2010.

The NBS forecasts that GDP will increase by 2.4 per cent next year, which is more than the two per cent originally anticipated.

An additional 4.1 per cent of growth is expected in 2011.

However, the bank predicts that the economy will contract by 4.2 per cent in 2009, a higher figure than the 2.4 per cent previously forecast.

Ivan Sramko, NBS governor, told Reuters: "The expected development is in line with the worsening outlook of the eurozone. There is a risk pointing towards a bigger GDP decline."

Low global demand and falling domestic consumption, exacerbated by growing unemployment, have been blamed for the change to Slovakia''s economic forecast.

The NBS predicted that global demand will recover during 2011 and will be reflected in an improved export performance for Slovakia.

Mr Sramko told AFP that an increase in exports may be linked to Volkswagen beginning production of its new New Small Family UP! model at the company''s plant in Bratislava.
