Slovakia could face new gas crisis

Slovakia may be faced with a new gas crisis during July as Russia is threatening to cut its European supplies.

Russian supplier Gazprom delivers gas through Ukraine and the disruption is expected as the latter country''s Naftogaz energy firm has been unable to honour a payment deal.

However, Slovakian prime minister Robert Fico said that people and businesses within the state need not be afraid of a repeat of the situation which occurred in January.

Earlier in the year Russia shut the gas supply over a mid-winter pricing dispute which led to an estimated 1,000 Slovakian companies, including car manufacturers such as Kia Motors and PSA Peugeot Citroen, having to curb their production.

"An eventual suspension of gas supplies, which is highly probable at the end of the first week of July, will not have consequences for Slovak households or industry," Fico told Reuters.

Up to 70 per cent of Russia''s gas supply to Europe flows through Slovakia before reaching other countries within the region.
