International crisis management, also known as overseas military operations, cost Slovakia €30.17 million (£25.7 million) during 2008.

Figures from the Defence Ministry showed that Slovakian troops worked on seven missions across five different countries with 551 soldiers deployed on foreign soil at the end of 2008.

The military personnel did not engage in any form of combat - instead their work was based around establishing peace in areas damaged by conflict and helping with reconstruction, TASR reported.

Work included guard duties, defending buildings and people, liquidating munitions and undertaking patrols, observations and monitoring.

Ongoing operations, which are set to continue following approval from the Slovakian government, include supporting a number of operations in Afghanistan, Cyprus and the Balkans.

The figures also showed that nearly two-thirds of Slovakia''s military is connected to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, which it joined in 2004.

General Lubomir Bulik, Slovakia''s chief of staff, recently said that the state''s military is considering lowering the number of troops it has deployed in Kosovo.
