Stefan Harabin becomes Supreme Court chairman

Stefan Harabin, the former Slovakian justice minister, has been chosen as the chairman of the state''s Supreme Court.

The politician received 15 votes in favour of his appointment from the Judicial Council while two abstained.

His nearest rival, Eva Babiakovac, received 14 votes against her becoming the next chair.

President Ivan Gasparovic has given prime minister Robert Fico control over the Ministry of Justice while a replacement for Mr Harabin is found.

Mr Fico told TASR that he was well suited to take on the role in the interim due to his educational background and work experience.

He added that his appointment in the interim does not create an imbalance of power within Slovakia''s coalition government as the political and judicial processes are separate entities.

"I wouldn''t draw a link between the Supreme Court and the Justice Ministry, as judicial power is independent in Slovakia and lives its own life," Mr Fico explained.

Robert Fico has been prime minister of Slovakia since 2006.
