Javier Solana opens Bratislava conference

Javier Solana, the European Union''s (EU) high representative for the common foreign and security policy, opened a conference during his trip to Slovakia.

The politician visited Bratislava on June 30th to meet with Slovakian prime minister Robert Fico and Miroslav Lajcak, minister of foreign affairs.

He went to Slovakia to discuss a number of international issues including the ongoing economic crisis, the Balkan region, the Eastern Partnership countries and the development of EU defence policy in the region.

Mr Solana told Sita that the country had made remarkable progress during the last few years.

He said: "The country has carried out a real load of work over a very short time; you became members of the European Union, NATO members, Schengen members, and even entered the eurozone, so I may tell you, it is really exceptional," reported the Slovak Spectator.

Slovakia recently welcomed the Chinese president Hu Jintao on an official visit to discuss increasing bilateral relations between the two countries.
