International green hotel standards 'will fail'

Proposals for a new global standard to ensure hotels around the world are abiding by green regulations is not realistic and is "doomed to failure", according to one sector commentator.
Laura Greenman, director at ecoescape, was commenting on last year''s news from the IUCN World Conservation Congress that proposed a new environmental tourism certification scheme.
"Global green certification is doomed to failure. Like any accreditation scheme, it''s in danger of homogenising what is a broad and varying industry and at the same time risk having no or little impact with consumers," she warned.
Ms Greenman added that creating green standards for hotels was one thing, but expecting every resort in the world to be able to comply with them was "ludicrous".
However, travellers who are keen to stay in a green hotel may wish to book a stay at one of Slovakia''s AquaCity resorts.
The Telegraph recently reported that the hotel in Poprad boasts a family water park, health spa, conference centre and two hotels - all with a zero carbon footprint.
