Industrial production in Slovakia increased during May, new figures have revealed.

Figures from the Statistics Office, based on daily production figures, showed a slight rise from 109.7 to 110.3 between April and May.

Although statistics indicate a year-on-year fall, the majority of the reduction in production occurred between October and December 2008 with the index''s total for industrial production averaging 108.9 for the year so far.

Elsewhere, manufacturing in numerous industries increased from the previous month with output in rubber and plastics, basic and fabricated metals, electrical equipment and transport equipment going up.

Other areas including textiles and leather products, food and drink, and wood and paper all showed increases from April to May.

The National Bank of Slovakia recently said that an economic sentiment indicator suggests Slovakian GDP is to stop declining.

Findings from the index showed that there is growing confidence among consumers and within the industrial and retail sectors.

The gas crisis in January was cited as one of the reasons for the economic indicator falling.
