The continuing wet weather in the UK has pushed an increasing number of Britons into booking a holiday, new research has found, which could include a break to Slovakia.

Speaking to the Times, Sarah Smalley, managing director of GFK Ascent-MI, said last week saw a "significant spike" of passengers looking to jet abroad to a sunnier destination, when compared to the previous seven days.

Britons'' urge to get away from the rain could mean that more people book late deals, which could provide a welcome boost to the travel industry, she stated.

One late booking may be for a river cruise down the Danube, which could see holidaymakers enjoying sights such as Bratislava and the surrounding countryside in Slovakia.

Also noticing the trend is Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for ABTA - The Travel Association, who commented: "We have seen an upsurge in bookings this week. The weather recently has definitely contributed to an upturn." ADNFCR-2242-ID-19275206-ADNFCR
