Many Britons 'still travelling as normal'

There are still "significant" numbers of people who are travelling and taking a holiday this year, in spite of the recession, it has been revealed.

Research from the Association of Independent Tour Operators has revealed that more than three-quarters (77 per cent) of people surveyed planned to travel as much this year as in 2008, with 72 per cent intending to spend the same amount of money.

And only half of those questioned were planning a one to two-week holiday in the UK, compared with more than 70 per cent planning to travel to destinations in Europe – which could include the budget-friendly Slovakia.

Commenting on the findings, Bob Atkinson, travel expert at Travelsupermarket.com, said there were bargains to be had, as people were snapping up holidays and air travel at prices not seen before.

"Whilst we know that unemployment figures are still rising, there are still a significant amount of people out there who are able to continue as normal and are still travelling as normal," he explained.
