As the UK summertime takes a turn for the worse with grey skies and rain predicted until September, more people are booking last-minute holidays in order to escape the weather, it has been revealed.

Ian Bradley, a spokesperson for AITO, said that as the summer started out well with plenty of sunshine, many people decided they would spend July and August taking advantage of it at home.

"[When people] realised that the Met Office in the last week or two said that the weather was going to be [poor], there was a flurry of activity as people wanted late bookings," he explained.

And Britons hoping to book a last-minute trip may wish to head to Slovakia, where they can take in the surroundings of the Tatras Mountains, home to an abundance of wildlife, including bears, which may interest the whole family.

Holiday bookings since the start of the school holidays have increased by 32 per cent year-on-year, according to Monarch Flights and Holidays.
