Britons 'should exchange holiday money in cash'

Britons should ensure that they exchange their holiday money - which may include the cash they plan to spend during a trip to Slovakia - in order to avoid any hidden charges, according to one sector commentator.

Dan Moore, senior researcher at Which? Money, said some people buy their currency online in the hope of getting the best deal but then end up having to pay 2.5 per cent to 2.75 per cent cash handling fee.

This, in turn, removes any advantage consumers may have had in buying the currency, he warned.

"A big advice is to get cash out of a hole in a wall in the UK, walk across the road to any of the exchange bureaus and pay in cash," Mr Moore recommended, adding that this could save the 2.5 per cent charge on a card.

His comments come after research from currency provider FairFX.com found that only four per cent of respondents understood that commission free still meant they would be charged.
