President Nicolas Sarkozy announced that France would open its borders on July 1 to all workers from eight former Communist countries that joined the European Union four years ago. The move, announced in Poland, abolishes restrictions a year earlier than planned. The eight countries - Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia - have faced labor market restrictions in several Western European countries.
