Bratislava airport general director Karol Biermann will be dismissed from his post at the airport's general assembly on Friday, said Transport Minister Lubomir Vazny on the sidelines of Wednesday's Government session. Biermann, along with Finance Minister Jan Pociatek, visited J&T financial group co-owner Ivan Jakabovic on his yacht in Monaco shortly before the Slovak koruna's central parity rate against the euro was lowered to 30.126 SKK/EUR in May. Opposition SDKU-DS vice-chairman and former finance minister Ivan Miklos has claimed that J&T and another financial group - Istrocapital - were the main beneficiaries of the move. NBS is currently looking into who was buying the koruna on May 28.
"If at a time when we should be fighting financial groups, the Finance Minister appears in the company of people from those groups, then this isn't trustworthy," said Fico, describing Pociatek's conduct as "unethical, immoral". Fico, who had earlier heaped heavy criticism on Pociatek, also said that he had asked Vazny to dismiss the entire management of Bratislava airport at the next general assembly.
"I identify with the prime minister's opinion. He is chairman of the airport's managing board and its general director, and such conduct is irreconcilable with this post," stated Vazny. “It is too early to say who will replace Biermann in his post, but I have someone in reserve”, said Vazny.
The development project for M. R. Stefanik - Airport Bratislava (BTS) is underway, said Vazny. "Of course, Biermann was involved in the process, and the new director will have to play himself in very quickly," he admitted, adding that he doesn't see any significant problem with this, however. "Work on a new terminal should begin this year, in order to make it in time for the 2010 charter season," said the minister.
