Grey Beard Geyser

The geyser: the original borehole casing was removed in the 1990’s and the area around the borehole today gives the impression of a natural spring. The principle of Sivá Brada geyser’s function is not the same as in the case of typical geysers of Iceland, New Zealand or Yellowstone. The reason for sudden release of accumulated volume is not hot water vapour but rather the carbon dioxide massively present in the deep, circulating groundwater of the Carpathians.

Waterfalls: High Tatras

Our most spectacular and mighty waterfalls comprise those in the High Tatras (Vysoke Tatry). Their origin is tied to the presence of glaciers and they are often located at places where adjacent tributary glacial valleys open to the main ones high up on their steep sides, from where the streams tumble down.

The highest, called Kme?ov vodopad (Kmet’s waterfall), is made up of several rock levels and has a height of 90 m in total. It is the lowest and the largest of the three waterfalls that fall after each other from Nefcerka down to Koprova valley. All three waterfalls are located in the altitude range of 1580 – 1200 m. The vertical drop between the highest and the lowest points of the waterfalls is 900 m, which is why the three waterfalls are presented as the longest cascade of waterfalls in Slovakia. Kmetov waterfall is named after a significant Slovak natural scientist Andrej Kmet, the founder of the Slovak National Museum.

Waterfalls: Low Tatras

The highest waterfall in the Nizke Tatry, Brankovsky vodopad falls 55 m down over the limey edge of a massive rock. Vajskovsky vodopad is situated in Vajskovska valley. It is made of a stone step shaped by glacial activity.

Waterfalls: Slovak Paradise

In the second most attractive area of Slovakia, the Slovensky raj, waterfalls are associated with the canyon valleys, gorges and ravines. They exemplify the development of the river-sculpted landscape, in which all stages of waterfall development can be seen, such as rapids, cascades and the signs of reverse (back) erosion. The highest waterfall is Zavojovy vodopad (Veil waterfall) in the Sokolia dolina (Falcon valley), made up of 5 drops that measure approximately 75 meters in total.

Canyons: Slovak Paradise

There can be few other places where it is possible to encounter within such a small area such an enchantigly varied landscape - meadows, chasms, canyons, gorges, plateaux, caves and waterfalls.
